How we do it

Brick face, not the joint

Sleeve anchors go through solid brick, never into the softer mortar line, which is where a lot of DIY and low-bid mounts eventually fail.

Natural and stacked stone

Epoxy anchors set into stone that is often irregular in depth. We probe for solid material before committing to a hole.

Tile and brick veneer

Thin veneer over a stud wall gets a different approach entirely — sometimes anchoring past the veneer into structure, sometimes a load-rated masonry anchor, decided on site.

In detail

How we read the wall before drilling

Masonry is not one material, and the first ten minutes of any stone or brick job are spent figuring out which one we are actually looking at. A tap test tells us whether the face is solid or a thin veneer panel over framing. Looking at an outside corner or an edge near trim usually shows the veneer thickness. A small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot confirms the depth of solid material behind the surface.

Only after that do we pick the anchor. Guessing is how brackets end up in a half-inch of veneer with nothing behind it, and it is the reason we would rather spend ten minutes probing than come back for a fallen TV.

The anchor depends on the material

Solid clay brick takes a sleeve anchor through the center of the unit, away from the edges so the brick does not split. Hollow concrete block needs a screen tube filled with epoxy so the anchor has something to grip inside the void. Natural limestone and sandstone, which are common in older Austin homes, get a threaded rod bedded in epoxy, because the material is too variable for an expansion anchor to bite reliably.

Thin stone or brick veneer over a wood-framed wall is anchored through the veneer and into the studs or a backer behind it. The veneer becomes a spacer rather than the load-bearing surface. Each of these takes a different bit, a different hole depth, and a different cure time, and we carry all of them on every masonry call.

Where the wires go on a masonry wall

Solid brick and stone have no cavity behind the face, which means there is nowhere to fish a cable. The wiring route therefore gets settled before the TV position is final. Where the masonry is an accent panel with drywall beside or above it, we route cable into the drywall and come out at a nearby outlet or console. Where the whole wall is masonry, a slim paintable channel follows a mortar line or the edge of the stone to keep it visually quiet.

If there is no outlet anywhere near the TV, we will tell you before the visit so a licensed electrician can add one, rather than leaving you with an extension cord running across the hearth.

Almost always, given the right anchor for the specific material. What changes is the anchor choice and drilling approach, not whether it is possible.

Will drilling crack my stone or tile?

Slow-speed diamond bits with steady pressure are what prevent cracking. Rushing a masonry hole with the wrong bit is the most common cause of a cracked tile or stone face.

What does masonry mounting cost?

Base install by TV size, plus $35 for standard brick, or $50 for uneven stone or tile.

Do you patch the holes if we ever move the TV?

Masonry patching is quoted separately since the material and color match vary a lot, but we can typically handle it in the same visit if you ask ahead.
